OneinfiveglobalVCfirmsinvestingtodayhaveatleast10%ofits2026investmentsinUShardwarecompanies.

Whatmakesthishardwarecycledifferentfromthelastis

intelligence.Forthefirsttime,robotshavethecapabilityto

generalizeinnovelways,operatinginunfamiliarenvironments.ThatshiftintophysicalAIisexpandingtheaddressablemarketforrobotsinunprecedentedways.Virtuallyeverywarehouse,factoryand

Arethereshoredsectorsintheroomwithus?IntheyearssincethetradebottlenecksofCOVID-19,theterms

“nearshoringandreshoring”haveneverstrayedfarfrompublicview.Googlesearchesforthetermshitsevenall-timehighsinthelastthreeyears,thelatestinJanuary.

Judgingbytherhetoric,youmightexpecthundredsofforeignfactoriestohavedecampedtoplaceslike

AlabamaorFlorida.Butthefactoryopeningshavenotfollowedthesearchtraffic.

Instead,whatwe’reseeingisashiftawayfromChinaandtowardother(mostly)distantmarkets.China’sshareofUSimportshasdropped9percentagepointssince

2019,whileplaceslikeTaiwan(achipmanufacturerfuelingthedatacenterboom),Vietnam(arising

computermaker),Ireland(apharmaceuticalshub)

andMexico(anautoassemblycenter)aredominatingtheirownspecializedpocketsofcommerce.

Onenotableexceptionissemiconductormanufacturing.

ConstructionofUSmanufacturingfacilities(primarilyforcomputerchips)hasjumped6xinthelastfouryears.Yet,thisinvestmentisstillyearsfrombearingfruit.For

example,outofsixfabplantsthatTSMChasannouncedforArizonasince2020,threehavebrokengroundandonlyoneisinproduction.Untilmoresuchplantscomeonline,theUSwillremainanetimporterofadvancedtech.
